We take everything for granted, especially in families. Those little things we do for each other do not seem to count. It feels as if no one cares. As time passes one wonders if it has been worth it. The roots of family ties and affection go deep and, like a plant, need to be watered and nurtured to remain fresh and vibrant. Research has shown the importance of love, caring and sharing in families. It is important to express appreciation, show affection and say that you care. Parents have to be aware of the importance of laying the foundations and weaving the art of expression into the family fabric. Teach a child by example and he adopts the practice early on and makes it a way of life.

A family is unique and important for each member. Each one of us wants to feel special, to be cherished, loved and valued. Caring, appreciation, consideration are important family values. Though we may feel a lot of love in our hearts, showing it is important. A few words at the right moment give a nice warm feeling to the other family member. It also gives a glow to the giver. A family is an emotional ecosystem that thrives on a symbiotic relationship. It does not take a lot of effort to say “Thank you, I really appreciate it” or “That's really nice of you” or words to that effect when your brother, sister or parent does something for you. It is the little cement that binds the ties and makes them stronger.

There's good in everybody. Boost. Don't knock.
- Warren Harding

Life in a family is not always smooth sailing. There are moments when one is quite irritated with the other. There is inner rage, frustration and sometimes a deep feeling of hurt. Intentionally or otherwise actions or words may hurt. Again, magic words like “I'm sorry”, “Please forgive me” heal and cure. A positive attitude works wonders in dispelling the shadows of misunderstanding and annoyances.

Then there are times when a family member feels depressed. A gentle touch, a few words to boost his or her spirits and empower him or her and show that you are all there in their time of need are little things that work. Kindness, a few words or touch at the right moment and the value is immense.

It may not always be easy to say it. However, one can always write little notes of love, of apology, of appreciation and just a line or two to show you care. The thought in written form stays in memory for a long term and is reciprocated. This mutual sharing, caring and bonding strengthens ties over time and gives each a strong, solid support that helps him grow as an individual.

Words, the look of an eye, a little touch, a tiny note and a commitment to accept, forgive and give are all the magic ingredients that make for a harmonious family life. Yes, it does take some effort but it is worth it.
