If you asked me to name the three scariest threats facing the human race, I would give the same answer that most people would: nuclear war, global warming and Internet.

What is Internet? My English teacher says, “Internet is a shallow and unreliable electronic repository of dirty pictures, inaccurate rumours, bad spelling and worse grammar, inhabited largely by people with no demonstrable social skills”.

Further she asks, “Where can you find one million monkeys sitting at one million typewriters?” You are right, chatting on the Internet!

And one of the main reasons that people put up against internet and chatting is that kids are being offended by obscene material, when really they are just saying, “Our kids are stupid, and are no longer allowed to be social and talk to anyone ever again, because if they do, they will DIE".

I think they should give us cyber age children some credit. Like anything else, you can use the Internet for good or ill. You can get out of it what you want to. There's no evil about it. Transportation, in particularly Car Accidents causes more death than any of the disease virus. Does this stop us from using cars in our daily life?
Twenty years ago no one could have imagined the effects the Internet would have: entire relationships flourish, friendships prosper…there's a vast new intimacy and accidental poetry, not to mention the weirdest porn.

The entire human experience seems to unveil itself like the surface of a new planet. I think that the online world has actually brought books back.

People are reading because they're reading the damn screen. That's more reading than people used to do.

Internet Chatting suffers with Crisis of Identity and Trust. Children spend more than the required time via chatting, which could be risky because real identity of the person is not known.

It also exposes children to inappropriate materials and experiences by pictures of violence, pornography, propagandas, which may mislead them. Excessive usage of internet can also create psychological behaviour problem.

Some say, Internet is useful for finding information. Well practically, getting information off the Internet is like taking a drink from a fire hydrant.

Internet is so addictive, it mesmerizes children. Their eyes are glued to a time-wasting miniscule electronic particles coming out of a screen. Internet is a good slave but a bad master. It is unable to distinguish between what is beneficial and what is not so good for most of the people.

Example – Websites on Hate Speech, political biases, harasses religious cults. It diverts their attention from co-curricular and physical activities such as sports. Can you believe that in a football loving nation like Germany, this year, even during recent soccer world cup children were busier surfing the web rather than participating for football matches being played in the country, which reflects diminishing interest towards sports. Excessive usage of computers Leads to health problems– Posture problems, eyes problem and nervous disorders.

Even the Software is not age appropriate leading to children feel frustrated and failure. Further, it makes them a spoiled brat, as they want everything right now and right there. Recently in a school in Canada, a shooting incident happened because of over stimulating gun shooting internet games and graphics.

Technology shapes society and society shapes technology. Our way of life has been influenced by the way technology has developed. In future, it seems to me, we ought to try to reverse this and so develop our technology that it meets the needs of the sort of life we wish to lead.

In today's world, Knowledge is power. Internet is a huge knowledge centre – a learning resource. Providing educational material, online publications, internet friendships, interaction with subject matter experts, information on hobbies, games and sports, Internet based education and learning tools. It allows students to learn at their own pace, provides hands on experience. It makes learning interesting through animations, multimedia and audio/video presentation. Computers and Internet can be particularly beneficial for students with special needs, like hearing or seeing disability and also with learning disabilities. Lack of regulation and monitoring of Internet as an organized body, allows uncensored and unfiltered information.

Example – Recently, realizing the negative role of Internet in youngster's development, country China has banned Internet for minors, as the government has realized that cyber cafes have become hotbeds for online gambling and crime. What we need is a regularizing and organizing some governing laws at country level as well as individual usage level for the effective utilization of Internet and also that the benefits overcome the drawback.

Example – Usage of Car, number of accidents can be reduced by age limits, adherence to usage guidelines and governing rules and regulations. Friends, we have become people unable to comprehend the technology we invent. Why does this magnificent invention of science, which makes information access so easy and brings us so little happiness? Because we have not yet learned to make sensible use of it.

Since we have no choice but to be swept along by vast technological surge of Internet, we might as well learn to surf. My favourite quotation about internet is “The Internet is the most important single development in the history of human communication since the invention of call waiting.”

Cyberspace may be more humane and fair than the world than any governments have made before?

People have more knowledge, which increases their self confidence. It may help develop better communication, social and emotional skills; and it may also help developing new world skills, such as image, photo editing and graphic designing, web development, online book publishing. With the help of Internet, we will create a civilization of the Mind
