The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated... I hold that, the more helpless a creature, the more entitled it is to protection by man from the cruelty of human kind. - Gandhi

Zoo, a man made forest, a collection of wild creatures kept in their almost natural habitat for public exhibition. Visit to a zoo gives us a unique opportunity to see and know about different species of animals which is otherwise difficult. An ideal picnic spot, zoo is a great attraction for many people, especially children. Delhi zoo or “National Zoological Park of Delhi" is situated at Purana Qila in New Delhi and is spread over an area of 214 acres. Along with the wildlife the zoo also consists of a library, a storehouse of information on animals, birds, plants, rare zoological species, etc

Before entering the zoo one has to buy a ticket. For the safety of the animals the zoo authorities do not allow outside food or drink and plastic bags inside the zoo. There are approximately 200 varieties of trees in the zoo, with a display of their name/ descriptions. There is also an open-roofed mobile van available within the zoo for traveling around the zoo.

Entrance of Zoo has a beautiful garden in its front welcoming the visitors. There are different kinds of parrots, pigeons, peacocks and some other amazing feathered friends. Some of them are imported from other countries. A few birds are larger than many animals.

The right walkway guides us to the chambers of the animals such as Chimpanzee, Hippopotamus, monkey, Wild Buffalo, Lion and Zebras etc. While the left one leads you to the enclosures of the water animals. There are separate enclosures for birds, animals and reptiles. Tigers and lions have separate well protected enclosures. There are canteens to take lunch and benches to take rest under the green trees. Clicking pictures of the animals is also permitted in the zoo. We can view wild exotic animals such as elephants, lions, and tigers. They are objects of interest because we cannot generally see them in our daily lives.

Keeping the animals in the zoo has its own benefits to people. Most of us like viewing animals because it entertains and amuses us. People go to zoos to get diverted from their routine life and are able to appreciate their beauty.

We appreciate more watching animals live as compared to looking at them in television. We can take a close look of how they look like in real. People are so curious to observe animal's behaviour patterns, moves and their sounds to communicate to their own species and to people as well.

The zoo controls wild animals from harming and killing people. Group of animals can be seen in the forest and wandering in woods which can be very dangerous for people to come close to them. Most individuals who work at a zoo are animal lovers and work to educate society about human threats and risks of extinction.

Also many animals are illegally hunted, destroyed or pushed to the point of extinction. Zoos help save animals so that they do not get killed in the wild. Zoos also create a wonderful learning environment for people of all ages to see exotic animals face to face and learn about their importance in the world.

There are different school of thoughts on existenceof zoos. Some people consider it a conservation tool while others see it as imprisonment.

The Indian wildlife contains several endangered species that are living critically on the edge of extinction. Zoo offers shelter to such species, it is their last chance for conservation. Zoo helps in conservation, reproduction, education, research and recreation. Conservation is rescuing, finding homes for, and preserving threatened or endangered species.

Deforestation, Pollution, Human exploration is creating problem to existence of many species of the animals. Furthermore, people create zoos that are prisons for the poor animals to amuse themselves.

One problem with Zoo is that amount of space available for the animals in cage is always limited. Animals need space for running, hunting and relaxing. Even if people try to make surroundings identical to the natural conditions, they can't do it. Zoos have birds which cannot fly, and tigers who cannot hunt. They are bound in unnatural small spaces and are kept away from the public by cages and bars. They suffer stress and often display abnormal or self-destructive behaviour. Animals are captivated and have no freedom.

Aquatic animals do not have enough water. Birds are prevented from flying away by having their wings clipped and being kept in birdhouse. We can learn more about wild animals by watching them in their natural habitat. Not feeding three times a day or comfortable place to sleep can replace wild conditions. Animals would have to live in cages, when in the wild, their territories would usually stretch for miles. It is cruel to keep animals in small surrounding and make them frustrated and sad.

Animals exist in this world not to amuse people. If people want to help them, they have to protect the wildlife and not destroy it. The pleasure people take in viewing animals in zoos and laughing at them is not good enough reason for keeping the animals there.

However, good thing about zoo is that it plays a vital role in society as a source of educational and scientific knowledge. Zoo is utilized for educational purposes. In a modern society like ours most children have little or no contact with nature. Many people think that the ability to react to nature is blocked if a child does not at an early age deal with living animals and plants.

Many schools take children to zoos mainly to teach them about nature, the environment, endangered species, and conservation. Far from encouraging bad treatment of animals, zoos provide a direct experience of other species that will increase ecological awareness. Zoos should support conservation of plants and animals, educating the general public and provide safe areas for declining populations. They have the power to do so, it would be nice for them to take advantage of their capabilities.

Visiting the zoo helps people to understand and respect wildlife, but it is hard to see how looking at caged animals can teach us anything about their lives in the wild.

Delhi zoo is a famous tourist spot for zoo education. They contribute to conservation, science and research. They provide an educational, rewarding experience for visitors. They also provide shelters for animals. Children are usually involved in activities to learn more about the animal kingdom.

Visiting to the zoo gives opportunity to see a variety of animals in different shapes and forms. It helps us to do valuable conservation work of animals and help educate people about the plight of endangered animals. Zoo furnishes an increase in scientific learning about animals and habitats.

After visiting the zoo children come away with a greater interest and understanding of the animal world. And take part in the international efforts to save animal species in danger of becoming extinct.

Wild animals need their freedom and don't enjoy imprisonment. No matter how well their keepers care for them, many suffer because they are not suited to living in a cage, tank or enclosure. Imprisoned animals tend to live shorter lives as per a study.

Modern zoos claim that they care for their animals and provide people with an enjoyable day out. Zoos are of great importance as they protect and preserve a number of endangered species of animals and birds. It is also the ideal way to bring people the children close to nature and to the animal world.

Visiting to the zoo gives great addition to our knowledge. Zoo is a place of infotainment that is education and entertainment. It may be suggested in the end that the animals kept in a Zoo must be treated sympathetically. Man owes a duty to protect all the creatures of God as he protects himself.
